Joanna Showalter

Joanna (Souder) Showalter comes from a long line of musical appreciation and talent. Her great-grandmother Hannah Wenger Witmer could impressively whistle one tune while simultaneously humming another, and although this trait was not found to be genetic, Hannah’s love of four-part harmony acapella singing was passed along to her many descendents.

Joanna began her musical career as an instrumentalist and enjoyed gracing audiences with her piano and flute playing until she found her voice with the Eastern Mennonite High School touring choir. Wonderful experiences with the EMHS choir, including a singing tour of Italy and Switzerland after graduation, paved the way for more musical involvements down the road. Joanna joined Chamber Singers her freshmen year at EMU and sang soprano for 4 years with this quality group of musicians. Squeezed between intensive Nursing classes, Chambers rehearsals were a therapeutic release and an essential component of emotional sanity, especially during her senior year at EMU.

After obtaining her license to practice as a registered nurse during the summer of ‘04, Joanna began working full time on 4 East, the Telemetry (Cardiac) Unit at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Joanna is passionate about healthy hearts and holistic nursing care. She works both day shift and night shift, so you never know when you might find her sleeping. She enjoys creative cooking with her husband Clay, traveling, gardening, taking long walks, finding bargains at thrift stores and spending time with family.

Joanna was born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley, and her parents & younger siblings still live on a country road outside of Harrisonburg.  Joanna credits her wonderful and supportive family for their continuous love of life, music, and each other.  Joanna was married to Clay Showalter in December of 2006 and they live in Harrisonburg.
