I
was raised on vocal music; my parents sang lullabyes to my two younger
sisters and I and taught us songs to offer for prayer at
dinner.
As soon as we were old enough--or maybe even before that--my parents
would "encourage" us (there really wasn't any way out) to sing as a
trio at gatherings of extended family or for our grandparents when we'd
visit them in the nursing home.
I started piano lessons at age 6. When our family moved to Virginia, I
auditioned for the Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir its inaugural
year (I was a 4th grader), and sang with the SVCC for the next 7 years
under director Julia J. White. In 10th grade, I joined the Senior,
Touring, and Chamber Choirs at Eastern Mennonite High School, led by
Jay Hartzler. Singing with Chamber Singers at Eastern
Mennonite
University under Ken J. Nafziger was another unique and very fulfilling
experience. Through the years of individual and group musical studies I
developed an appreciation for a variety of musical and leadership
styles. During high school and college I continued to offer
my
musical gifts and leadership in worship services at various venues,
including my family's church, Park View Mennonite.
When the opportunity arose to be a part of an independent women's a
cappella group, I leapt at it. Singing with Shekinah greatly energizes
me; to find beautiful blend and harmony with strong, musically
talented women of faith is a treasure and blessing from God. It's my
prayer that the group may continue to bless those who hear us
"here together singing."
